Anything Art Deco, especially jewelry, architecture, or fashion, is always going to grab my attention. Classic cocktails, such as the Grasshopper, are no exception. In 2018, the classic green libation toasted its 100th anniversary. The cocktail gained fame in 1918 when Philibert Guichet of New Orleans’ Tujague’s restaurant took second place in a New York City competition. The cocktail, named for its green hue, became so popular that it remains on the restaurant’s menu.
During the pandemic, the Grasshopper, a classic cocktail with a century-old history, experienced a significant resurgence in popularity across the United States. As people sought comfort in familiar foods and vintage drinks, the Grasshopper, often described as a dessert in a glass, became a go-to choice. According to the New York Times, one distillery saw sales of crème de menthe, the basis of the Grasshopper, rise by a staggering 40 percent in 2020.
Serve the cocktail in a chic vintage coupe glass, and channel your inner Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. There are many versions of the recipe, but there’s little variation. This recipe makes one cocktail. Enjoy.
